The human’s struggle against their self identity, against their inner demons, can significantly amplify the dread of an external threat in a story. After all, the only thing worse than facing an existential threat is facing it while also fighting with oneself. Or perhaps even more alarming, dealing with somebody else’s inner demons while dealing with your own and an existential threat.

This is the scenario posited by L.S. Patel in her novel The Lycan’s Queen

The Plot of The Lycan’s Queen by L.S. Patel

It’s a story of an ordinary young woman named Aarya thrust into a world of court intrigue in a werewolf kingdom on the verge of collapse.

Fated to be the mate of King Dimitri Adonis Grey, a man half mad with the very real struggle against his ferocious Lycan self, it falls to her to help him regain control of himself while navigating the intrigues of court life, assassination attempts,  and battling a few inner demons of her own. It’s a pretty tall order for anyone.

What is a Romantic Thriller?

A romantic thriller is a story that combines love and suspense, where the characters are drawn into a romance while facing danger, mystery, or intense situations. It keeps you on the edge of your seat with action and suspense, while also focusing on the characters’ romantic connection.

6 Main Elements of a Romantic Thriller Genre

Writing a Horror stories

Romantic Plotline

At the heart of the story, there’s a developing romance between two characters, often filled with emotional intensity, chemistry, and sometimes obstacles they must overcome together.

Suspense and Danger

The thriller aspect brings in suspense, with the characters facing life-threatening situations, mysteries, or high-stakes conflicts that keep readers on the edge of their seats.

A Strong, Complex Plot

Romantic thrillers usually have a well-structured plot with twists, surprises, and moments of tension. This keeps readers guessing and engaged as the romance unfolds.

High Emotional Stakes

The characters’ relationship and the dangerous situations they’re in raise the emotional stakes, making the romance and the suspense feel more urgent and compelling.

Action or Adventure Elements

There’s often a sense of action or adventure, whether it’s a chase, fight scenes, or a mission, adding excitement and pacing to the story.

Resolution with Romance and Suspense Payoff

Romantic thrillers typically offer a satisfying ending that resolves both the suspenseful elements and the romantic storyline, giving readers closure on both fronts.

Why The Lycan’s Queen is a Great Example of a Romantic Thriller Genre

L.S. Patel uses the qualities of both known and unknown inner darkness to heighten the tension of a romantic thriller by injecting the dreadful possibility of doubt into the narrative—doubt in one’s self. Suspicion in the people one thought they could trust.

As Aarya grapples with her volatile mate and the challenges of being married to a king, she’s haunted by betrayal from those she trusts. The story explores human (and werewolf) weaknesses, creating a world where nothing is certain and conflict comes from all sides. This element adds a layer of fear to an otherwise adventurous, romantic story filled with excitement, attraction, and steamy moments.

It’s an effective strategy for engaging your reader in a gripping read. And if you haven’t checked it out, you should read The Lycan’s Queen to see the romantic thriller genre in action!
