Chapter two - Robin
Thankfully I can drive up to the cabin, which is great because I have a lot of equipment in the back of my truck that I don’t want to leave in it. I have to take a couple of trips to get everything safely stashed in the cabin. The cabin itself is like a dream come true. It’s a wooden cabin, with a tiny little porch. A small living room, kitchen, and one bedroom with a small bathroom. It’s got everything I’ll need for the next couple of weeks.
My stomach is growling again so I think I am going to go back to that diner. When I get to my car, I see the Lodge has a bakery as well and I contemplate my options. I actually really want to sit somewhere nice and have a big cup of coffee as well, so I decide to drive into town.
My growling stomach is making overtime as I arrive at Daisy’ Nut House and I look forward to some savory sugary goodness. The lady behind the counter instantly welcomes me when I walk into the diner.
“Hello, what can I get you?†I scan the showcase, there are so many amazing looking pastries calling my name. I smile and bite my lip. “I really have to choose, don’t I?â€
She laughs. “That depends, how hungry are you and how much pastries can you take in one sitting?â€
I pretend to think about it. “Let’s just start with…..†And then I spy the Cinnamon Roll. “That one!†I exclaim. Cinnamon rolls are my weakness. I think they are the holy grail of pastries. Soft and sugary, with crispy ends and the taste of cinnamon that is not too overwhelming but it’s unmistakable. You can wake me up for one of those holy pastries any time. And this one is perfect. It is big, looks crunchy on the outside, but I can see the outline of the soft dough coming through underneath a perfect icing. The lady behind the counter laughs. “Would you like that to go or will you be eating here?â€
“I will be eating here, thanks,†I say.
“Would you like something to drink with that?â€
“A big caramel latte, pleaseâ€
As the lovely lady makes my order, I look around the place. It’s almost 3 PM and it looks like this is the diner’s quiet time. Along with the showcase, there is also a large sitting area where you can enjoy your meal or snack. It all looks so inviting, I can’t wait to spend more time here.
There is an opentable next to the window, which will be perfect so I can enjoy my coffee and check out the scenery at the same time. Yay, I am so freaking happy. I turn towards the lovely lady to pay. The cinnamon roll looks even better up close. It’s on a tiny paper plate, and the steaming hot coffee is in the cutest mug. It’s a big mug and I thank the heroes of coffee.
With my hands full and my eyes on the prize, I walk towards the table next to the window in a straight line. I feel like I am floating and I have to suppress my need to do a little happy dance. It’s then when movement in the corner of my eye catches my attention. There is a man, walking like he’s being chased by killer-bats, all the while typing furiously on his phone. He does not look where he is going and it suddenly seems like everything is moving in slow motion. My fierce and joyous stride is on the quick side and I try to halt, I try to stop, I try to scream but there is a collision coming that can’t be avoided. A strange sound comes out of my mouth and that’s when the man looks up. He tries to back down, but resistance is futile. And that’s when I come in contact with the brick wall this man’s body resembles.
