Prologue
We all live in a circle of risks to achieve something,
sometimes something really important. Our life stands on those risks and when we talk about risks we all know that the result can be really good…but sometimes it can be really bad. Sometimes we are risking due to the circumstances. To find something knew or otherwise trying to keep the things the same. Some people risk achieving their dreams, something they never had. Some people risk when they are scared. Some people risk when they have nothing to lose. But, most of the risks are usually bring lots of mistakes. What I want to say is that this story is full of risks too. And mistakes…Each of the people in this book is risking, but with what?...To find this out you may read this story. And may be except the risks, you will find out something better, something interesting and new, sounds ridiculous maybe, but if life wasn’t strange would it be interesting? So, this story is about a young girl, about her friends, about adults, about teenage years, about friendship, kindness, cruelness, sadness, circumstances, love and hate, feelings…and people. But let’s return to that young girl...and mistakes.
She prayed, prayed a lot…then in the evening she came to her room, took her baby and went to orphanage…
(Pirjanova G. Enjoy reading!)
~20:55, Saturday evening, it was a silent and calm day, that’s why there weren’t so many people near the orphanage’s courtyard. A woman, who seemed to be like a young girl was standing at the doors and thinking about something, she was drowning in her deep memories and the tears on her face hadn’t dried yet. She felt herself so lost and the baby who she was holding was peacefully sleeping. Her eyes were full of tears, but she didn’t cry. She didn’t want her baby to wake up. If it was bright someone could see incredible mixture of green and brown inside her eyes, but now in this windy and dark weather, we can see only the couple of sparkling blurry eyes, which are full of emptiness and sadness. She was standing and looking at the doors, when suddenly the lights in the window turned on and the door of the orphanage opened. The woman
suddenly was interrupted from her thoughts. Another tall and well-dressed woman in black skirt and coat, with pale and serious face went out from orphanage’s doors and came up to the young woman with a baby.
-Do you want to leave him here?
-Her…
-Sorry?
-She is a girl. Her name is Andrea.
The woman gave her baby to the tall lady and kissed her for a last time.
-I’m so sorry, my love, I just hadn’t another choice.
The baby was still sleeping. Then young woman went away and the lady was looking on her back for a long time. Then the baby woke up and the tall lady went in…
-Andrea! Anny! Oh god, where is that girl again?! Andrea!!!-Lady Miranda called her three more times…no answer…no girl.
-You! You girls! Have you seen her? Where is she?
-No, Miss Miranda, We don’t know…
-Oh goodness!-Miss Miranda took her head with her hands and closed her eyes, when suddenly:
-Miss Miranda!!!- Young pretty girl hugged her. The woman stayed in shock for a moment and then looked up at the girl standing opposite.
-You naughty girl, what have you been doing again?...Oh god…wh..what have you done with your hair?!
-Did you like it? Oh I was so busy with my hair today, three hours! Can you imagine?! –Young girl turned round and round.
-Hm…-Miss Miranda crossed her hands (Like she adored doing) –You dyed your hair again! What color is it? Blue?..or..-Miss Miranda was touching Andrea’s hair –Or..green?..let me…see..Girl! Where did you take this color?
-Liv made it! Oh isn’t it nice?
-Very..um…interesting, thanks for god you didn’t touch your above part of hair, Your natural color is fine! Why are you killing your hair?Anyway, I need your help Anny, One newcomer girl doesn’t want to leave her room and always cries. Could you please, help me? Could you talk to her, make her feel comfortable?...Um… Make her understand
that we all here is the one big, friendly family…
-Erm…to be honest…actually I wanted to go and eat something…but
okay, let me see that offspring… oh sorry the flower of the life. –The girl went to the kid’s corpus chewing her gum and singing something…
The orphanage has 3 sections:
1. Kid’s wing.
2. Boy’s wing.
3. Girl’s wing.
I think it is obviously that kids are in the first, girls in the second and the boys are in the third corpus. Why? This rule was developed by the second director of the orphanage and the owner also made a signature on that document. Now the director Mr. Robinson tries to continue the tradition of the orphanage and the rule (that says that girls and boys that are older than 10 years old are not allowed to meet and communicate with each other) is being used nowadays too. Kids that are under 10 can be in the same corpus, but the girls are in one room and the boys must be in another room. After they’re 10 girls go to the girls and boys go to
the boy’s corpus. The orphanage has 2 flours, first has 2 canteens, kid’s and director’s room, and the Miss Miranda’s room is also there. And the second floor has two parts. Boy and Girls’. There is a wall between girls and boy’s corpus and they have two stairs. One for girls is on the one
side of the orphanage and second for boys is on the other side.
All of the walls in orphanage are full of notes and pictures that boys and girls write and draw for another generation of the orphanage. They are writing them to be always in the memories of orphanage children. Miss Miranda tried to wash or paint into white the walls, but children always write and draw again, so finally Miss Miranda had to give up.
Andrea went to the kid’s corpus and stood at the doors of two rooms, thinking:
-The door with the sun or the door with the cats?... –She entered the room with the cats and saw nothing except the clothes lying everywhere. Then she entered the door with the sun and there saw only the girls were Fighting and shouting. Then she entered to the room with the cats again and looked around very carefully, when she noticed something was moving under the load of clothes. Andrea went up to that and threw the clothes away. There was a girl…
-No! No! No! Go away! I do not want to see anyone! –Cried a girl and covered her own with the load of clothes again.
-Aren't you that, newcomer spoiled and noisy girl? Aren’t you? –Andrea sat down on the bed near the girl. The girl went out of the load of clothes and looked at Andrea.
-Spoiled? Noisy?- Sniffed the girl. –N-no, I’m very quiet and …and I’m not spoiled! Oh please don’t hurt me..
-Hey! Calm down. No one’s going to touch you, Your name?- Asked
Andrea wriggling her legs and looking at her bright yellow socks in white and, a bit old sneakers. The girl sat down near the Andrea.
-Monica.
-Very cool name, how old are you?
-Nine.
-So, Monica, could you tell me what happened and why you don’t want to talk to anyone?
-Huh, No! Why should I? Who are you at least?
-Now, Actually, I could be a magician, witch or a ghost, whatever you want!
-Hmph) –Smiled the girl and then suddenly hid her smile. –They said that if I don’t do what they want me to do, they would just make me to do that, And when I would be asleep, they would choke me, and they tore up my Bobby..-The girl showed her toy panda, that now has not
have his one ear and sniffled.
-Let me see, -Andrea took the toy, looked around and got up. –Okay,
give it to me, I will fix it…Um, I will try anyway, but if you will calm down and stop crying…-Andrea looked down at the girl’s sad little face. –I promise… -The girl nodded and Andrea went away saying
-Now unpack your clothes and put them into the cupboard. And oh…-
Andrea looked at the girl very seriously –Never, Your hear that? Never, think that someone is stronger than you. You can be more than you think you are now, just believe…
…-Tiny, Tiny girl…tiny…tiny girl, in a big, big house, living with a mouse…was singing Andrea passing the kid’s rooms and on the way upstairs. A few steps crossing the corridor with the walls covered with lipsticks, and another notes. Everything was so bright and pink and pretty…Yeah, It was the girl’s corpus.
Andrea entered her room: The first thing that cuts eyes is the bright blue lamp on one of the cupboards near one of the beds. Then we can see the walls that were painted so many times that now it has a strange color, something between grey and purple. One bed near the left wall
and one two-floor bed bunk opposite, near the right wall. Three long shelves and a little table. And a big window which you could see just entering the room.
Olivia was sitting and reading an old magazine that she possibly found in her old suitcase that came with her when she was taken by the orphanage. Andrea sat on her bed and sighed looking at the toy which took from little Monica.
-What’s this? –Asked Liv looking at the toy suspiciously from her bed.
-Have you heard about a girl who came Tuesday night?
-That…who critically doesn’t want to admit that she will be living in the orphanage? Something that starts from M I suppose…
-Monica!
-Yeah, and so what?
-Miss Miranda asked me to help her and when I went to her…Oh Liv she was so disappointed! So sad, I…Do you know the difference between the children who are taken by the orphanage when they’re little babies...And between those that are coming at the age when they are able to understand everything?
-Sure…
-She lives in the room with cats. And those girls have torn her toy.
-The room with cats is even worse than the boys from boy’s corpus.
-Definitely, I promised her to sew it. Um, do we have needle and thread?
-There in the one of the drawers. –Said Liv and continued reading the magazine.
Andrea found the needle and thread and started to sew the panda. When suddenly with a loud noise Wendy entered the room. Andrea who was focused on the toy suddenly pricked her finger.
-Damn! Wendy!
-I have the most interesting news that would be the most famous news this week! -Said Wendy (the owner of the 2nd floor bunk and the third liver of the room), sitting down on the bed near Liv.
-What news? –Asked Andrea sitting opposite them and licking her finger that she has just pricked.
-Last night at the boy’s corpus was found a dead body. –Said Liv interrupting Wendy who just opened her mouth to say what Liv had already said.
-Liv! Again! –Cried Wendy
-Hey, stop, dead body?! –Asked Andrea trying to show her friends that the dead body is not just a usual thing.
-He was found dead in his own bed. He was eighteen though, everyone says that he had a heart attack. –Said Wendy so fast, frightened that Liv could say it before her.
-Brrr…what a shit? I’ll ask Alex about this accident. –Said Andrea looking at the toy that she had just fixed.
Andrea’s thoughts:
I often think about the reason why I was taken here. Miss Miranda says that I was a little baby that time and that I was brought by a very young woman. Miss Miranda is my mum, even if not biologically, she brought me up, any other teachers of the orphanage couldn’t make me to listen to them. Miss Miranda wasn’t cruel to me but was very honest and fair. And if I ask her something she will say the truth. Yes, Orphanage became my home, because I haven’t been in another home, I have grown up here, and yes I am an orphanage child. I know every corner of the orphanage except the boy’s corpus. Although I can say that I know the whole orphanage, because Miss Miranda and Alex have told me everything about the boy’s corpus. Who is Alex? Alex is my friend and he is a Boy. Yes I know about the rules, but I met Alex accidentally. I was 14 and he was 13. The orphanage on the second floor has two parts, so the same is with the courtyard. A place for the boys, and for the girls. I accidentally went to the boy’s side and saw a big, great tree. I loved it and went to see it, to touch it, to try to sit under that tree. Then Isaw Alex sitting near that tree too. We talked till the evening sitting under that tree and talking about everything, sky and nature, orphanage and the life. I liked that conversations and told everything to Miss Miranda. Why? Because if I didn’t tell this to her, she would anyway find out and it would be better if I would tell her first, besides, Miss Miranda wasn’t just my mum, she was my teacher, my close friend and everything! Miss Miranda knew Alex before we met each other and knew that he was a fine boy. So, from that moment she allowed us to
meet each other, but if she would go with me and watch us. I was really happy, Alex was unusual person, and he loved poems, reading and was very clever. I loved our conversations and his poems. He told me everything about boy’s corpus and I told about our corpus. He is younger than me, if I’m now 17 and going on 18, he is now 16 going on 17. Wendy is 15. And Liv is 17 now. I don’t like Alex as a boy, the orphanage children mustn’t think about love till they leave the orphanage, but it wasn’t the reason. He was young, and more boring than clever, and He is going to be in orphanage another year...I’m leaving this year…
Now I’m going downstairs to give the toy panda to its owner. It is evening now, the time? Don’t know actually, might be eight or nine o’clock. The corridor seems like it doesn’t have the ending, and it is so dark. I hear only whispering and the quite voices, anyone could go crazy
if he were me, fortunately I got used to it. Three girls are sitting in the corridor talking and giggling; one is sitting on the windowsill and eating. I can’t really understand children who like sitting or walking or spend their
time in the corridor, in the dark evening or in the early morning. Loneliness. Do they feel it? I think the person who feels himself lonely, always trying to spend more time with people. It is really boring isn’t it? Being alone I mean, isn’t it very boring? I would understand if they loved to think about something serious or just to get over the pain,
sadness, angriness, offences, love, reading may be, but god this is the kid’s corpus! What are these guys doing in the corridor all alone? Why? None will tell us, no one would answer, because no one knows the story, the sad story of each of these orphanage children, who wouldn’t be orphanage children, if the fate wasn’t so cruel, or may be if people weren’t so silly and didn’t do a lot of mistakes. I suppose most of orphanage children are more introverts than extraverts aren’t they? I also loved to be on my own and think…think about different things…how it
feels to sleep with your parents at the frightened nights, how it feels to go for a walk with your dad and eat ice-cream and then laugh and play games, how it feels when it is Sunday and whole family is at home and
the house is full of mom’s delicious meal’s frequencies, how it feels when you go shopping with your mom and talk about some famous gossips, how it feels when you do something unusual and show your parents and then they praise you and hug with such an unbelievable big
love. Family love…I crossed another some strange kids and finally get to the room with the cats. I enter and see…Damn!
